2007 Ambrose Scholar Uploads HIV Prevention Educational Video to YouTube and Wins Public Health Award

To graduate from the Paul Ambrose Scholars Program, participants are required to use the tools learned during the three-day leadership symposium to implement a prevention education or health promotion project at their institution or in their community. With support from APTR and assistance from their mentor, students have one year to complete their project.

Elaine DePrang, a 2007 Paul Ambrose Scholar and student at the University of Houston College of Pharmacy, recently completed her project on HIV prevention and uploaded the educational video series to YouTube. In a 9 minute video presentation, Ms. DePrang covers the overall methods of HIV transmission, risk factors, the infective process of HIV, methods to prevent the spread of HIV and finally information on HIV testing. As part of the video series, Ms. DePrang also carried out video interviews with a pharmacist who specializes in HIV therapy and an HIV positive patient, who agreed to share her story so that others may learn from it.

Ms. DePrang was recently awarded the United States Public Health Service Excellence in Public Health Pharmacy Practice Award for her work on this project and others like it while in pharmacy school.
