PERC—Prevention Education Resource Center is growing and becoming a valued resource for many educators. The site has nearly 100 posted teaching materials and 300 registered users. We are working to increase the number of individuals who access and sign up for the site, as well as authors who submit their teaching materials to PERC. Significant outreach and marketing is planned for the coming year, but we need your help. Have you created high-quality teaching materials for prevention or public health education? If so, your colleagues across the country want to learn from you. Please consider posting your work on PERC - gain visibility, spread your good work, submit your material to a quality review process, contribute to the field, and affect the lives of students at other institutions!
You’ll also be entered to win great new gadgets! Authors posting their works on PERC will be automatically entered to win monthly prize drawings of either an iPodTM Shuffle or 2 Gigabyte USB Flash Drive.
Registration is not required to access most of the site. There have been 2,385 downloads of posted materials and thousands of visits to the website each month. In addition to the original Clinical Prevention and Population Health Curriculum Framework organizing structure, PERC includes undergraduate public health curriculum frameworks as well as an international focus.
With the Editorial Board in place and a review instrument approved for use, PERC Associate Editors are now conducting quality reviews of most of the materials housed in the repository. The Editorial Board meets by conference call on a quarterly basis and will have an in-person meeting later this year to finalize operating procedures, meet with potential partnering organizations, and learn from an academic journal editor. As new teaching materials are added to PERC, volunteer faculty reviewers will be sought to assist in the review process and offer discipline-specific reviews.
After more than a year of operation, the PERC website will undergo maintenance, updates to content pages, and a few enhancements to improve the user experience. Expect to see helpful new features by this fall.
Exciting collaborations and partnerships are also under development. Area Health Education Centers (AHECs) will soon be posting materials related to childhood obesity prevention. In addition, APTR is planning to form a partnership with the Association of American Medical Colleges’ MedEdPORTAL to cross-reference materials and provide journal-level peer review for authors who elect to post medical and dental-related teaching materials on both repositories.
Finally, we are pleased to announce the availability of multiple epidemiology and public health case studies on PERC. “Case Study Mania!” began in February 2008 with new case studies added every week. Student versions are available on PERC. Faculty who are APTR members (individual or institutional) may email to request the preceptor versions. To find case studies, Browse under “Type of Material/Case Study.”
