APTR seeks to extend classic “bench to bedside” research an additional step into the community by providing community engagement training to health professionals seeking to establish credible relationships with their communities. Although the definition of “community” will vary, the incorporation of the concept is an important step toward successful execution of the research design and infrastructure-building projects. Considered fundamental to the mission of many health professions schools, effective community engagement is viewed as essential strategy to improve health professional education, increase access to care, and eliminate health disparities. However, most health professions research faculty do not possess enough knowledge about the health and health needs of their communities or how to involve community members as true partners in the research process. The APTR Research Priority Workgroup has recognized the need to improve community engagement efforts related to clinical, translational, and behavioral research and its particular importance in the implementation of prevention and population health research. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Clinical and Translational Science Awards (CTSA) program incorporates the requirement for a community engagement effort in each funded project. NIH has issued several funding opportunities in the area of community-based participatory research, and many CDC-funded programs now call for community-based participatory approaches.
Objectives
- Attendees will develop enhanced research skills in the area of community engagement.
- Workshop evaluations will substantiate that the training was of high value to the participating researchers and that the skills learned will benefit their future research.
