Application Package

Created by Congress in 1976, the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (ODPHP) plays a vital role in developing and coordinating a wide range of national disease prevention and health promotion strategies.  As a federal office responsible for the formulation of national policy regarding health promotion and disease prevention, ODPHP is an ideal setting for residents to experience first-hand the basis for national policy decisions and to develop fundamental competencies in public health.  A major activity of the ODPHP is the Healthy People 2010 campaign and its implementation throughout the nation. ODPHP is also responsible for preparing briefings for the Surgeon General, Assistant Secretary of Health, and coordinating initiatives and policy documents among the various agencies within DHHS (i.e. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, National Institutes of Health, and the Food and Drug Administration).
