The APTR undergraduate public health education initiative aims to fulfill the National Academies of Sciences Institute of Medicine (IOM) recommendation that all undergraduates should have access to education in public health. This recommendation was a critical outcome of the November 2006 Consensus Conference on Undergraduate Public Health Education, which was funded by APTR through a grant from the Josiah Macy, Jr. Foundation. In 2006, the APTR Board of Directors approved a motion to make undergraduate public health education an organizational priority. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has provided funds to the APTR through a cooperative agreement to support the integration of undergraduate public health into the liberal arts curriculum and APTR has taken the lead to develop the following activities:

Curriculum Guide for Undergraduate Public Health Education
This curriculum guide is designed to assist faculty who are developing undergraduate courses in public health as well as educational administrators and faculty curriculum committees who are designing undergraduate public health curricula. Innovations in Public Health Education Awards
Funded through the APTR-CDC Cooperative Agreement, awards were given to thirteen institutions to increase the design, teaching and evaluation of introductory undergraduate course work in public health and epidemiology and to encourage faculty engaged in undergraduate public health teaching to share experiences and exchange tools. Meetings and Workshops
Undergraduate Curriculum Development Institute
On July 14-15, 2008 APTR will provide 45 selected teams with the tools needed to develop coherent undergraduate curricula in public health (in the form of majors, minors or certificate programs), including core courses, electives and experiential learning opportunities. Team members will build collaborative capacity and strengthen relationships between the campus and community and share experiences with colleagues working toward similar goals to link public health courses and initiatives with the essential learning outcomes of a liberal education. Undergraduate Public Health Day
On February 22, 2008
Undergraduate Public Health Day, a special activity of the APTR annual meeting TEACHING PREVENTION 2008, provided opportunities to collaborate with other faculty members teaching undergraduate public health courses and introduced faculty to a range of introductory curriculum in public health while providing best practices and skill building workshops to assist faculty in designing undergraduate public health courses.
Undergraduate Public Health and Liberal Education Faculty Development Workshop
The July 9-10, 2007 workshop provided 78 faculty members from 39 selected institutions the opportunity to attend a concentrated two-day workshop in Washington, DC to focus on one of three core breakout sessions to enhance their ability to teach Public Health 101, Epidemiology 101, or Global Health 101.
